Zero waste is a term that is being used more and more, but what does it actually mean?

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about zero waste, including the definition and ways you can live a zero waste life.

Read on to discover more.

What is zero waste?

According to ZWIA, zero-waste is:

“The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.”

Basically, zero waste means exactly what it says; there should be no waste produced regarding a product’s lifespan that could harm the environment.

How can I live a zero waste life?

It can be overwhelming when trying to live a zero waste lifestyle. When you start to research what zero waste means, it can be surprising to see how much waste every day living produces, making it quite daunting to make the leap and change your ways of living.

But here at Wave, we’re here to help you out. Below are ten tips on small changes you could do to start moving towards a zero-waste life.

  1. Use what you have before buying anything new

  2. Try and buy second-hand first and only if you really need it

  3. Move away from single-use products and choose reusable alternatives instead

  4. Get creative! By making your own clothes, make-up or candles, you’ll be reducing waste!

  5. Shop locally and support local farmer’s markets

  6. Look after what you have. By taking care of your clothes, furniture or anything else you own, it’ll be sure to last longer

  7. Buy a compost bin and start composting

  8. Try and shop at zero-waste brands (see below for our top 3!)

  9. Less is more. Only buy what you really need instead of splashing out on unnecessary products

  10. Don’t try and do all of the above straight away. Pick a couple of ideas to begin with and slowly start introducing other habits when you feel ready. Over time, you’ll be confidently living a zero waste life without realising how big of a change you’ve had to make to your routine.

It can be controversial to say that fashion brands can be zero waste, so that’s why we’re not going to say it! However, Mayamiko are challenging this and trying to produce a zero-waste production line by using different pattern cutting techniques and using scrap fabric to make hair accessories and sanitary products. The clothes are bold, bright and beautiful, and it’s a really great brand to get behind if you’re wanting to make the change to a zero waste life.
