Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone 17
It’s that time of year; the days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to fall, and the world is preparing for the next big move from Apple.
The iPhone 17 lineup has just been unveiled, and here’s everything you need to know so you can start the pros and cons list for your next tech purchase.
iPhone 17 Launch Date
Apple’s event was on Tuesday, 9th September at the Steve Jobs Theatre.
Preorders of the iPhone 17 start on September 12, with general availability globally, including the UK, beginning September 19.
The iPhone 17 Models
Apple has delivered a four-model lineup: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The Air is the standout newcomer, replacing the “Plus” model and taking the crown as the thinnest iPhone ever at just 5.6 mm.
What is the iPhone 17 Air?
Ultra-thin at roughly 5.5 mm, with a 6.6-inch display and a single rear camera. It's markedly lighter and slimmer than anything before.
Rumoured battery is modest (around 2,900 mAh), but iOS 26’s power savviness might help make the most of this.
iPhone 17 & 17 Pro/Pro Max
All models sport ProMotion displays.
Colour options seem to be growing more adventurous, too, perfect for pairing with our Wave Case products, too:
- iPhone 17: lavender, mist blue, sage, black, white
- iPhone 17 Air: space black, cloud white, light gold, sky blue
- iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max: deep blue, cosmic orange, silver
iPhone Power and Performance Rumours
Rumour has it that the A19 Bionic powers the standard and Air models, while A19 Pro goes into the Pro lineup. Pro models may get an in-built vapour chamber cooling system and a custom Wi-Fi 7 chip, with the Air likely featuring Apple’s own C1 modem and eSIM-only support.
iPhone 17 Camera
-
The front camera across all models is upgraded to 18 MP, allowing zoom and sharper selfies.
-
Rear cameras:
-
iPhone 17: dual vertical setup
-
iPhone 17 Air: single 48 MP lens
-
Pro/Pro Max: triple-lens array with telephoto with up to 8x optical zoom, plus a pogo-style bar design.
-
The Pro models also gain a customisable Action button, adding a new level of flexibility for photographers and creatives.
Pro models might also be the ones that offer reverse wireless charging, the ability to charge AirPods, Apple Watch, or other devices directly from the phone, something we’ve been edging towards with the development of MagSafe technology.
How much will the iPhone 17 cost?
While nothing is confirmed for the price of the iPhone 17 but the estimated starting prices (U.S. suggested; UK pounds likely similar):
-
iPhone 17: ~$799
-
iPhone 17 Air: ~$999
-
iPhone 17 Pro: ~$1,099
-
iPhone 17 Pro Max: $1,199+
The iPhone 17 seems ready to break from incremental year-over-year tweaks through the offering of the Air model, meaning that it might be worth the bigger price bracket.
